Brooklyn Law School Hosts Forum on Transgender Hate Crimes

A forum on hate crimes against transgender people was held in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday night.
The forum at Brooklyn Law School comes nearly three months after the state’s first hate crime conviction for the killing of a transgender person.

Dwight DeLee was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime in the 2008 slaying of Lateisha Green in Syracuse.

The forum’s organizer, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, expected Green’s relatives to attend. The group says transgender people face “pervasive discrimination, harassment and violence.”

Prevention strategies were discussed.

In June, a national coalition said transgender people accounted for 12 percent of victims of violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people reported in 2008.
