FIU Law School Names U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta as New Dean
R. Alexander Acosta, the current U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, has just been named dean of Florida International University’s Law School.
Acosta immediately offered his resignation Wednesday, effective a week from Friday.
Acosta, 40, will become the second dean to lead the College of Law. ”I am confident that Alex Acosta’s energy and his passion for the law and commitment to FIU and our community will take our law school to the next level,” said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique. “His connections at the national and local level and his proven leadership here at home will inspire the next generation of law students at FIU.”
Acosta will take over his new post on July 1.
”I am honored by the opportunity to take the reins of such a young and promising law school,” Acosta said. “I love this community and I am honored to now be part of the FIU family. With its world-class faculty and its outstanding students, the FIU College of Law will become one of the most respected institutions in the country. Together, we can make that happen.”

Terrible news for everyone at FIU.

No one is particularly excited about our new dean. We had some amazing candidates too, truly talented legal scholars who would have increased our scholastic reputation.
Instead we have this politicized idiot…

Are the previous posts CRAZY???? Alex Acosta was by FAR the best candidate to come through and we are incredibly lucky to have him! He’s young, energetic, super well connected, and not at all arrogant (like the other candidates). FIU will finally get the national recognition it deserves with a leader like Acosta. Most of the students in the building are VERY excited!

UGH!
I recently spoke to an admissions officer at FIU about the new dean and I was told that Acosta was probably not going to get the job. I’m sure he will be a decent dean, but FIU had such impressive suitors!
FIU’s tuition is so attractive, we would really shoot up the rankings if we had someone to shore up our reputation among academics. Acosta will not help attract top faculty or top students.
I wonder if I can un-withdraw from my waitlists! LOL!

Lets all stop pretending like it matters who our dean is. Acosta is abrasive and terrible – but it doesn’t matter.

I’ll admit that I wanted one of the other candidates but Alex is going to be a great dean. What he lacks in academic connections he makes up in political connections.

FIU is a great up-and-coming school. I’m sure they will survive the new dean.

Wow, I did very well at FIU in my first year and was lucky to get a tranfer to a real law school, the way that school wa run was a joke.
