UCSD in talks to Purchase Cal Western? Nope.

The representative I mentioned was UCSD Vice Chancellor Debra Neuman, who just told me that, no, there’s no talk of purchase. She was very careful about characterizing the conversations, at first using the words “partnership” and “merger” but then backpedaling on “merger.” We left it at conversations about UCSD and Cal Western “working together in some way.”

I dunno, that sounds like semantic waffling. What is the substantive difference between a merger, partnership, and a purchase?

    Partnership is like merger-lite.

UCSD will not purchase Cal Western, they will acquire them at no cost because Cal Western is 100% self sustaining. In fact, it operates at a surplus and will generate revenue instead of ask for money from the state. That is the main reason these talks failed in the 1980’s.
